Distress Signal

Posted on 17 Feb 2021 @ 11:22pm by Game Master Stephen & Lieutenant Dante Jones & Warrant Officer 1 Cirice Craven

Mission: A Miner Problem
Location: Bridge
Timeline: Mission Day 1 at 1303

The Antares was at cruising warp speed heading back to Earth after a successful training mission and using the new modular system installed in the ship's bottom deck. The ship had been performing well and as long as it was near a place it could reconfigure for an emergency the ship would be doing quite a service to United Earth space and flagged vessels.

Currently, the Commanding Officer was in her Ready Room going over some documents regarding the Deep Space Rescue Task Force she headed and the Antares was the lead ship of. Things were quiet as was the bridge the watchstanders likely bored and tired after some good shoreleave.

LT Dante Jones was serving as Officer of the Deck and at the Communications Console which WO1 Craven was manning an alert appeared. It was operational orders from Starfleet Command.

Cirice had been looking forward to a little downtime on Earth, not to mention so was her 'sidekick' Moose-kah who'd been a bit cranky at not feeling real grass between his toes. But the alert changed all that.

She relayed the information to Lt. Jones. "Priority One Alert.", she said as she tapped away at her console, "We've lost contact with the mining colony on Terra Nova B."

With a sharp sigh, Dante nodded in Cirice's direction and then spoke with clear and definite authority. "Ms Craven, acknowledge receipt of the message, " he said, pacing slowly across the bridge as he gave the orders. "Helm, set course for Terra Nova Moon B."

As he reached a stationary position in front of the Captain's ready room, Dante hit the chime and waited, his gaze now cast back at the bridge itself.

"Enter," Annett said, she had just finished her lunch and the steward was inside clearing the items to bring back to the main kitchen.

Dante stepped through the doorway as it opened, ignored his stomach as it protest rumbled and stood up straight. "We've received priority one alert, Captain," he reported. "Terra Nova's lost contact with the mining colony. We're en route to Terra Nova Moon B to investigate."

Annette stared at him for a moment and then nodded, "pressing business then. Continue to proceed at full warp. I will be on the bridge momentarily," Annett said.

"Affirmative, Captain," Dante agreed, simply. He returned the stare with a calm defiance that refused to break that visual lock regardless of who offered it up, then nodded and waited in case there was more. He hadn't been dismissed yet.

She turned to her computer and brought up the ship's messaging system and accessed the orders and forwarded herself a copy. She saw they were already acknowledged and then got up from her desk.

"Mr. Jones," Annett said before anyone could notice she was on the bridge. "Make a shipwide announcement all senior staff are to report to the wardroom for a briefing. You will remain here in command," she said, continuing toward the communications station.

"Yes, Captain," came the curt reply. At first, Dante had secretly hoped she'd step in and take over, let him grab some down-time out of the spotlight, but as command time went, standing on the bridge while the ship hit full warp towards an Interesting Situation was pretty damn cool.

Without any further fanfare or comment, he retook the big chair and accessed the comm. "This is Lieutenant Jones, Officer of the Deck. All senior staff please report immediately to the wardroom for a briefing from the Captain." He repeated that once more, just in case, then approached the helm officer. "Go to full warp," Dante told them, looking over their screens to check for an ETA.

"Ms. Craven," Annett said, approaching her communications officer. "I want you to try and get a copy of the original distress information. And see if we can't access the relays that the Novans would be using to speak to the colony on. I want to hear the last things sent by the colony and by the mining colony."

"On it, Captain.", Cirice said as she started to trace the message. Thankfully on one side, the relays were all from the same manufacturer and model, so they were all likely placed around the colony's establishment. On the other, there were a couple relays near the middle that were a bit overdue for maintenance and were a bit fuzzy in Cirice's opinion. A few more taps on her console and she had a full week's messages pulled. "How far back shall I start the replay, Captain.", she asked.

"Start with the past week if you dig anything up interesting keep going back until it isn't," Annett said, not really sure. "You can remain here with Lieutenant Jones and skip the briefing if you find anything urgent call," Annett said, starting on her way toward the lift before Circe could respond.
